Integrated Short Course 1
Day 1 (30 November 2022)
Petroleum Geology of SE Asia
Petroleum Geology of SE Asia will provide an overview of energy related challenges and opportunities within the region. Renowned Ian Longley will provide a deeper understanding of the petroleum geology of SouthEast Asia by discussing the history of exploration and politics which make up the region, detailing why and where hydrocarbons would be located, why they are oily or gassy, and why some regions have higher CO2 levels than others.
Day 2 (1 December 2022)
Core Description and Sedimentology
This session will provide an overview of core analysis in relation to petroleum systems and reservoir characterisation. Conducted by Dr. Narender (Sedimentology Specialist), participants will have a chance to observe basement, clastic and carbonate cores from the Malaysian basins, covering fluvian and Deepwater settings. Petroleum geology, sedimentological processes, core description exercises and the value of core analyses will be shared, as well as a related case study to draw context in entirety will be discussed, promising an enriching learning experience.
Virtual Fieldtrip to Miri, Sarawak Outcrops (Shallow Marine)
The virtual fieldtrip will provide immersive experience of shallow marine outcrops in Miri examining the sedimentary architectures of Middle to Late Miocene sediments around Miri-Bekenu Road. This virtual fieldtrip will provide the reservoir analogues to offshore Sarawak producing which will provide the closer view to the reservoir quality and characters.
Virtual Fieldtrip to Kutai Basin, Mahakam Delta
- Lower Kutai Basin
The virtual field trip will introduce tectono-stratigraphy of the Middle to Late Miocene lower Kutai Basin, facies and depositional systems of deltaic sedimentary, facies patterns, and observation of the current deltaic system as the key to interpreting the evolution of the Mahakam delta. In this virtual field trip, we will visit the complete section of the proto-Mahakam mega sequence from the fluvio-deltaic, shallow marine/ shelfal deposits, and deepwater deposits.

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)
This 1-day Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) course covers carbon capture and geological storage of carbon dioxide. Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) involves the long-term storage of captured carbon dioxide emissions in subsurface geologic formations.
Covering the aspects of CCUS including transport, storage and monitoring, economics and community engagement, the course explores the challenges of the current technology of geological storage, monitoring and verification including examples from working projects around the world.
It is ideally suited for a technical audience - Earth science (geosciences), petroleum engineering or chemical (process) engineering, as well as for economists, regulators, legal staff and managers wishing to learn more about carbon capture and storage.
