Global Resilience: Leading Capital Projects Through Poly-crisis and Change
    • View Session Details

      Session Description

      Speaker:

      Hilary Mercer

Executive Vice President of Projects & Engineering
      Shell

      Moderator:

Capital projects across the world, including in Malaysia and other international markets, are being shaped by a new era of complexity. The global energy sector is navigating a poly-crisis: the convergence of climate commitments, geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, evolving regulatory frameworks, and talent shortages. This multifaceted pressure is redefining how projects are initiated, financed, and delivered, demanding greater resilience, adaptability, and cross-border collaboration.

This panel will explore how project leaders can build resilience and drive excellence in the face of disruption, drawing from international experiences in managing large-scale developments. It will also reflect on how global best practices can be contextualised to support Malaysia’s evolving energy landscape.

Some key questions that will be discussed are as follows:

      • What is poly-crisis in the context of capital project management, and how is it currently manifesting across regions?
      • How do factors such as policy uncertainty, energy transition pressures, industry maturity, and talent constraints impact project delivery?
      • What lessons can be learnt from global projects, such as those in Europe or the North Sea, in navigating complexity and regulatory engagement?
      • How can local authorities and regulators like Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) enhance their role in protecting and enabling the energy industry amid ongoing transformation?
      • What practical solutions and future pathways can turn today’s challenges into opportunities for capital project execution excellence?
      • Strategies for successful Local Talent development to support the industries

      Session Description

      Title:
Shaping the Future of Exploration: Incremental Advances or Game-Changing Technologies?

Modern exploration successes are often strongly correlated with forward leaps in geophysical technologies and processes. How can service providers strike the perfect balance between providing incremental improvements to proven technologies and delivering game-changing innovations? Is the demand articulation as good as it could be?

Elsewhere, have we already seen the best of seismic attributes, QI, and inversion? Have these technologies already peaked? And what has happened to certain technologies that were once full of promise but have since seemed to be dormant or forgotten (e.g., shear wave exploration)?

How do operators view the latest advancements in elastic data? Have they struck a balance between what is needed and what is desired? What technologies are likely to represent the next major leaps for oil and gas exploration practitioners?
